When Tweeting Goes Wrong: Olympic Greek Track Star Voula Papachristou Kicked Off Team After “Racist” Comment

By on

You know, you would think that after all of these years of social networking and watching person after person destroy their lives and reputations due to careless activity via the internet that some people would eventually catch on and begin to consider what they put online.

I often say that Twitter is a gift that was cursed by that damned Devil.  I promise.  It is because of Twitter that I have had the opportunity to connect with so many talented individuals and now have the ability to do business with people inside the entertainment business, but at the same time I watch constantly as individuals [famous and non-famous] make stupid mistakes on Twitter because they weren’t thinking only to later completely regret whatever it was that they post, wishing that they could take it all back…and I am sure that is exactly how Voula Papachristou feels at this very moment…hopefully.

Voula Papachristou spent years training and perfecting her triple jump in hopes of making it to the Olympics and after years of training she finally got her chance, unfortunately her slippery fingers, lack of good judgment and that damned site that destroys lives in 140 characters or less ruined those chances, so now like the rest of us Voula will be watching the Olympics at home…from her couch in Greece.

The triple jumper was kicked of her team after she made a very questionable tweet about African immigrants in Greece:

With so many Africans in Greece…at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat homemade food!!!

Of course after she made the tweet she followed it up with:

That’s how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don’t press the replay! I press Play and move on!!! [Referencing the comment she made]

However, not too long after the tweet was made, she came back to twitter and made the following statement:

My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races. I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.

It was later announced that Voula would no longer be participating in the competition…
