President Obama Says He Now Supports Gay Marriages; Thanks Daughters For Opening His Eyes

Acknowledging that he has come to the conclusion that same-sex couples should be allowed to marriage whom they chose, President Obama still believes that the ultimate decision should be left to each state individually to decide.

 

While some take the President’s announcement as an odd political stunt being used to drive a huge wedge between himself and Mitt Romney, who has made it very clear that he is opposed to gay marriage. This announcement also, coincidentally, comes on the heels of Vice President Joe Biden’s public approval of gay marriage on Sunday.

 

During his sit down with ABC News, President Obama admits that it was his daughters that ultimately helped swayed his opinion in favor of gay marriage.

 

You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective

The main concern among Obama supporters comes from his sudden change in opinion.  President Obama has been openly opposed to gay marriage since 2004 basing his decision on his Christian background and beliefs, however, in the height of his re-election campaign he is now suddenly 100% behind gay marriage.  Some are worried that he is only expressing his approval to try and sway younger voters in his favor especially since recent polls have shown that over 50% of Americans are in support of gay marriage.

I am sure that this will be a huge conversation piece for a while, especially for the Republicans.  We shall see what effect this sudden announcement has on President Obama’s re-election campaign.
