Oprah Winfrey Teams Up With Tyler Perry For OWN Network

Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry Team Up For Own Network

 

Since the launch of Oprah Winfrey’s network station debuted OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), the network has been struggling to reach the high numbers that Oprah has been hoping for.

Although her recent series Next Chapter which has featured exclusive interviews with Usher and Rihanna has helped spike numbers, it was only recently that the network saw numbers high enough to Oprah’s standards after Evelyn Lozada appeared on Iyanla Vanzant’s Life Coach televisions series. Still, even with these recent numbers word has spread that if something is not done soon OWN may not make it.

In an effort to save the OWN Network, Oprah enlisted the help of her good friend, Tyler Perry to assist her with the network.  Making the announcement via press release, Oprah revealed that she has teamed up with popular and powerful screenwriter and producer to create shows and content for the network.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today an exclusive partnership with Tyler Perry, the award winning actor, director, screenwriter, playwright and producer, to become his singular destination for all new television series and projects, including two new scripted series for the network to premiere in mid 2013. These will be the first original scripted series for OWN and Perry will executive produce, write and direct both series.

 

Both Oprah and Tyler seem extremely excited about being able to work together, David Zaslav who is the president and CEO of the company over OWN Network (Discovery Communications) seems to be more happier than the two citing Oprah’s ability to pull in Tyler Perry for the network as a ‘major coup’ that demonstrates the power of ‘Oprahs brand’.

“I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come,” said Oprah Winfrey, CEO, OWN. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.”
