Let’s Talk: Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin was only 17 years old when he was gunned down by an overly aggressive “Community Watch” guard who patrolled the gated community where his fathers fiancée resided.  After going to a nearby corner store to purchase an Arizona and a pack of Skittles for his younger brother, Trayvon began to walk home.  As he was walking towards the house he was approached by the community watch guard, George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, who has had multiple complaints regarding his overly aggressive tactics, saw the young boy walking down the street at which time he called 9-1-1 to report a “suspicious person” walking in the neighborhood.  It is reported that the dispatcher that got Zimmerman’s phone call advised him not to approach the teenager in which Zimmerman replied “These assholes always get away”.  Ignoring the dispatchers plea, Zimmerman got out of his car with his 9mm pistol and approached the young boy who was still holding the pack of Skittles for his younger brother.  What actually took place after that, no one knows for sure, but we do know that one innocent young boy was shot to death for no reason other than him being Black in a white community.

As of yet, this Zimmerman guy has not been arrested as Sanford police claim that there is not enough evidence to prove that Zimmerman did not shoot Martin in self-defense.  Witnesses have come forward and have confirmed that when they tried to tell their version of what happened when the shooting occurred they were “corrected” by police officers at the scene.  One witness says that she heard Martin cry out for help, but when she told that to the officer on the scene who was taking statements, he corrected her and told her that is was Zimmerman who cried out, but that wasn’t true.

The biggest question on everyone’s mind right now is why has this man NOT been arrested? It is so obvious that this was a racially motivated crime.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what really happened here.  He was a young black man, walking slowly in the rain with a hoodie on (I would assume to keep his head from getting wet) in a predominantly white neighborhood.

Pardon me for throwing the race card out there (I seldom do but I think that it is appropriate in this case) but if the roles were reversed Trayvon Martin would be sitting under the jail right now.  There would be no questions asked, no need for witness statements, nothing.   It bothers me that they would even allow his man to continue to walk the street after committing such a violent act.  They have the proof that he was told to stand down and he refused to do so.  This man approached Martin with a gun, witnesses heard the boy cry out for help, yet they choose to believe Zimmerman instead.  Has anyone bothered to ask him what he needed a gun for in the first place?

Where is the justice for this young man? Who will pay for his death?
