Black In Movies: Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee released “Do The Right Thing” in 1989.  The movie featured then newcomers, Martin Lawrence and Rosie Perez, in addition to Rudy Dee and Spike Lee.

The movie focused on the rising racial issues and dangerously intense racial tensions that were developing in a Bed Stuy neighborhood in New York. Spike Lee is said to have written the movie in less than two weeks.

The Movie received a lot of flack and criticism, mainly from the white community.  Many protested the release of the movie for fear that the movie was encourage blacks to riot.  to no surprise no riots were started after the movies release.

Do The Right THing” received two awards for best picture:

Best Picture (1990 Chicago Film Critics Ass)

Best Picture (1989 Los Angeles Film Critics Ass)
