Artist Sportlight: Rock Band Orangelight Catalyst

By on

The Rock Band, Orangelight Catalyst, is one of Baltimore’s own home grown groups.  With a new age sound and feel, the group just recently did an interview with Baltimore’s 98 Rock on June 10, 2012 and followed up at Baltimore’s Sound Stage on Monday June 11, 2012 to a sold out show.  Consisting of childhood friends, the band is 3 members strong with Lead Singer and guitarist Alfredo Lozano aka “Fredd fredd bad johnny”, drummer Joshua Pulley aka “Sachmo Badd Johnny”, and guitarist Steve Fotopoulos “ssbj”. These men have made a voice for themselves pushing through many obstacles along the way.

Coming back strong after suffering from 3 gunshot wounds  back in December 2010,  the band’s African American drummer (who is my little brother as well) Sachmo Bad Johnny shared some thoughts with us:

PinkNik: So, tell us why you decided to venture in to Rock Music Industry instead of Rap. Most young black men try  getting into the hiphop game as either a lyricist, music producer, and/or both?

SBJ: I am not a rapper, I love rap [but] rap isn’t what I do.  I am a drummer, I love drumming, [and] drumming is what I do. Every black person that is musically talented is not a rapper, that’s a stereotype.

PinkNik: What advice would you give anyone interested in getting into the music business?

SBJ: not to look at it as a business but look at it as a big community too shy to talk to each other and you have to be the glue to bring them together.

So, Orangelight Cataylst being the strong glue that it is will be holding the music community together started doing so recently with their new songs  City of New Hantid and Use Cellar Door .
